A comparison

HTML or an image? Which signature works.

An HTML signature is a small table of text and pictures: your name is words, and each line can link. An image signature is one picture of all of that. Here is what each does when images are blocked, on a phone and in a search, and when the picture is the better choice.

HTML, images blocked

One image, images blocked

The short answer

Is an HTML or an image email signature better?

HTML, in nearly every case. Its details stay readable when images are blocked, every line can link, screen readers and mail search can read it, and a detail changes without remaking a picture. One image wins only on looking exactly the same in every client, and only while images load.

The verdict

Choose by what it has to do.

Choose HTML when

  • Anyone needs to call, click or copy something in it, which is most signatures.
  • Your readers use classic Outlook, which blocks pictures from the internet by default.
  • People will search their mail for your name or your number.

Choose one image when

  • The signature is artwork with nothing to click, and must look identical everywhere.
  • You accept that some readers will see an empty frame until they load pictures.

Questions

Before you choose

Is a signature made here HTML or an image?

HTML: table markup with your details as text and links, and images for the photo, the logo and the icons. The photo's motion is an image; everything you read is text.

Will my signature's pictures arrive as attachments?

Not with this one. Its images are hosted and linked by their address rather than attached to the email, and attached images are what some clients list as attachments.

Is there a limit on how long an HTML signature can be?

Gmail takes up to 10,000 characters of signature. Every design here stays under about 7,500, with a banner and tracked links included, which leaves room.
